How We Met

Neulyn and Avery met as teenagers. It's hard to say who fell more immediately in love with who, but suffice to say, it was love at first sight. Neulyn would come up from Palo Alto on the Caltrain, to see Avery, who was living in the Mission Bay area of San Francisco, and Avery would drive down to Palo Alto every chance he could get. They explored beaches, forests, and farms with Neulyn's puppy, Q, and loved discovering new restaurants in San Francisco (Neulyn was a vegetarian, back then!). Soon, it became clear that no matter the activity, they loved spending time together - and quickly, Avery asked Neulyn out, on the platform of the Caltrain station, one night before Neulyn left for home.

Unfortunately, time was the one thing against them - Avery's new startup had just raised their first major round of funding, carrying with it new opportunity, but increased stress and need for focus - and Neulyn was preparing to transfer to UCSB, where she'd be getting her physics degree. With such transformative chapters of their lives just starting, they knew that trying to balance their developing relationship at long distance would be nigh impossible. So, after affirming each other's feelings for each other, they agreed to accept the circumstances of fate and go their separate ways, hoping that the love they felt for each other meant that they'd end up together again.

Finding Each Other Again

Some years passed, and Neulyn's physics education brought her to the Ya Ma Tei district of Hong Kong - at the same time that Avery, now on his third startup, was traveling through Asia with his friend Eric. It was a rainy night in March, and Avery and Eric had just finished dinner, when Avery decided to snap a photo of the neon-lit Wan Chai alley they were walking down, and post it to social media. Neulyn saw the photo, and messaged him - "Um, are you in Hong Kong"? They were only a few miles apart.

Immediately, they knew their feelings hadn't changed. They began dating again, and moved in together soon after. The pandemic happened, and while it came with obvious struggles, and forced them to spend every waking hour together, it made them realize more than ever - they loved spending time together, and loved overcoming challenges side by side. For Biggie, Avery's terrier, it was also love at first sight, and Biggie didn't hesitate to let Avery know that Neulyn was now his favorite. Neulyn, Avery, and Biggie now live together in Palo Alto, and are eager to enter a new chapter of married life as a family.
